Fletcher "Fletch" Armitage was a first lieutenant in the United States Army. He served with the Thirteenth Field Artillery Battalion (the "Lucky Thirteenth") in Wahiawa, Oahu, Hawaii. In 1941, his wife Jane left him.

Armitage attempted to get his unit out to meet the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Instead, he narrowly escaped being killed by Zero pilots. He was able to dragoon a few soldiers (composed of Dave, Clancy and Arnie) into a makeshift guncrew, dragging his M101 howitzer gun around with a commandeered De Soto. During the fighting, Armitage disturbingly learned firsthand of the invaders' brutal treatment towards taking prisoners. When it became clear in February, 1942 that U.S. forces could not hold Oahu, Armitage surrendered with most of the American forces.

He was placed in a prison camp in what had been Kapiolani Park, and was subject to Japan's inhumane policy regarding POWs. Armitage was fed enough to survive on, but not much more. He was forced to rebuild the damage that had been inflicted to the Waikiki area.

Armitage spent the next year and a half doing his best to survive. When the United States arrived and reconquered Oahu in 1943, Armitage and several other POWs in Kapiolani Park were liberated by U.S. forces. He was taken on board a U.S. aircraft carrier, and nursed back to health.

After the Japanese were subdued, Armitage went back to Wahiawa. He found Jane, and learned of her life as a forced comfort woman. He suggested that, since the divorce was never finalized, that they might give their marriage another chance. Jane agreed, although it was quite clear that both would have many difficulties to overcome.

Armitage anticipated that he would be shipped out for Midway within a few months to continue the war against the Japanese.
