William Shakespeare left Stratford-Upon-Avon for London in 1588 and returned only once, in 1596, to bury his son, Hamnet. In 1598, when Queen Elizabeth granted Shakespeare a divorce from Anne Hathaway, his ties to Stratford were cut. Anne continued to live there with her two daughters, Susanna and Judith.
