Split in Worldwar[]

The Germans defeated the Race in battle at Split in the summer of 1943. Race Intelligence Operative Drefsab set up a base in Diocletian's Palace within the city. Their arrival wasn't an earnest attempt at capturing the region, but in reality a trap to lure the Tosevite menace Otto Skorenzy where he could be killed and removed as a threat to the Race's operations in Europe. Skorenzy almost immediately deduced that it was indeed a trap.

Bringing along several German fighters, including panzer commander Heinrich Jäger, and allying with some local Croat fighters, Skorenzy devised a plan to lure the Race's soldiers out of the Palace and then infiltrate the base to capture it from the inside. Jäger had been brought along specifically because he had interests in archeology and history and could guide them through the lower levels of the Palace.

Skorenzy's plan proved successful. Drefsab took the base's only helicopters and headed towards the decoy while Skorzeny and his fighters entered the base and engaged the defenders from behind. By the time Drefsab discovered he'd been deceived, the helicopters had wasted most of their weaponry on the fake hideout. Under the influence of a ginger-addiction, Drefsab made the dangerous decision to order the helicopters to land outside the Palace and counter-attack the Tosevites on foot. Stumbling through a smoke filled street during the shootout, Drefsab came face to face with Skorenzy and realized it for only a moment before being gunned down. All Race soldiers in Split were killed.

Diocletian's Palace sustained some heavy damage in the fighting, much to Jäger's dismay.
