Sapporo is the fifth-largest city in Japan by population. It is the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture.

Literary comment[]
In the short story "Joe Steele", Sapporo is the capital of North Japan, the puppet state created by the Soviet Union from Hokkaido and northern Honshu after World War II. It is destroyed by the first American atomic bomb on August 6, 1949 at the end of the Japanese War.
However, Sapporo is only mentioned once in the novel during the "Red Curtain Speech" and Sendai is the North Japanese city destroyed by an American atom bomb.
