The City of Lamar is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous city of Prowers County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 8,869 at the U.S. Census 2000. The city was named for Secretary of the Interior Lucius Q.C. Lamar.
Lamar in Supervolcano[]
The Governor of Colorado was in Lamar when the Yellowstone Supervolcano erupted. He ordered out the National Guard to assist in protecting lives and property while still in Lamar. Vanessa Ferguson reflected that the town was a couple of hundred miles further from the volcano than Denver and so the Governor might not yet have realized the seriousness of the situation.[1]
Lamar in Worldwar[]
In 1943, Lamar became an important forward base for the U.S. Army during the Race invasion.[2] Lamar became a launchpad for hit-and-run raids led by Rance Auerbach into Lizard-controlled Kansas throughout 1943.[3] The population actually grew with the arrival of the soldiers and refugees from the east.[4]
The Race finally attacked the town directly in 1944 as part of an overall assault on Colorado from Kansas.[5] After a successful aerial bombardment,[6] the Race drove on the town, forcing an evacuation.[7] While their drive was ultimately stopped outside of Denver,[8] Lamar remained in Race hands for the remainder of the fighting.
