A goitre or goiter (from the Latin gutteria, struma) is a swelling of the neck or larynx resulting from enlargement of the thyroid gland (thyromegaly), associated with a thyroid gland that is not functioning properly.
Worldwide, over 90% of cases of goitre are caused by iodine deficiency.
Goiters in "Topanga and the Chatsworth Lancers"[]
After the unsatisfactory meeting with Bruce Delgado, Jared Tillman and his son Connor were heading home to Topanga, when Jared had the idea of Topanga stopping the sale of its seas salt if they won the coming war with Chatsworth. Connor asked what was so special about sea salt and Jared explained that the iodine in it helped prevent goiters. He explained that it was a swelling at the base of the neck and it also made people stupid. Connor liked the idea and said that Chatsworth would have to get it from far off Santa Monica or even Long Beach and pay through the nose to avoid goiters. Jared wasn't sure Pete Reilly would go for it since Topanga made a lot of its hard currency from the salt but would bring up the idea if they fought and Chatsworth lost.[1]
