The Diary of a Young Girl (also known as The Diary of Anne Frank) is a book of the writings from the Dutch language diary kept by Anne Frank while she was in hiding for two years with her family in the Amsterdam "Achterhuis" during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The family was apprehended in 1944 and Anne Frank ultimately died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany. The diary was retrieved by Miep Gies, who gave it to Anne's father, Otto Frank, the only survivor of the Achterhuis. The diary has now been published in more than 60 different languages.

Anne Berkowitz (née Frank) was a survivor of the Holocaust. She was saved from the genocide through the help of Dutch friends who hid her and her family, along with others, in the Secret Annexe. During her time of refuge, she wrote a diary detailing her experiences. She even hoped to publish it. However, once the Netherlands was liberated, Berkowitz simply dropped the diary in the trash because it reminded her too much of her bad experiences during the war.
