The Grapes of Wrath is a classic novel published in 1939 and written by John Steinbeck, who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature. This tale of displaced Oklahomans trying to survive in California during the Great Depression is frequently read in high school and college literature classes. A celebrated Hollywood film version, starring Henry Fonda and directed by John Ford, was made in 1940; however, the endings of the book and the movie differ greatly. In 1989, the film version was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
The Grapes of Wrath in The Gladiator[]
After the Soviet Union won the Cold War, a new film adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath was made in the late 21st century. Like nearly every other cultural art work, the film was a boring, unimaginative propaganda piece, extolling the virtues of communism above the evils of capitalism. Annarita Crosetti and Gianfranco Mazzilli saw this version to celebrate the end of finals. Neither enjoyed the film; Annarita preferred the novel.[1]
