Connecticut

Connecticut is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west and south (because various islands of New York span Connecticut's entire coast), and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The capital of the state is Hartford while the largest city is Bridgeport. Southwestern Connecticut is part of the New York City metropolitan area; three of Connecticut's eight counties, including most of the state's population, are in the New York City combined statistical area, commonly called the Tri-State Region.

Connecticut in "The Breaking of Nations"

In 2031, the governor and the lieutenant governor of Connecticut refused to participate in the Pence Administration's immigration sweeps. In response, President Pence ordered their arrest, and appointed the chief of the Connecticut State Police as acting governor.

In response, Governor Nicole Yoshida of California, Governor Dakotah Ng of Washington, and Governor Axel Lysbakken of Oregon unified into a single breakaway nation called Pacifica. Yoshida, as acting president, announced Pacifica's secession. Further, the Connecticut legislature impeached, convicted, removed Pence's appointee in short order.

As Pacifica gained recognition, and the U.S. government continued its authoritarian course in response, Connecticut state officials joined their neighbors and stopped cooperating with the federal authorities in any way. In response, President Pence ordered the National Guard units in Connecticut and other rebellious states into federal service. In response, Pacifica's acting president, Nicole Yoshida, announced her support for Connecticut and the other rebelling northeast states.

Literary comment

Connecticut's decision to leave the U.S. and form "Newtopia" with the rest of the rebelling northeastern states is a key plot point of James Morrow's work, "The Purloined Republic".

Connecticut in "Election Day"

Connecticut went to Senator John F. Kennedy Jr. in the 2016 presidential election.

Connecticut in The Guns of the South

Connecticut remained part of the Union during the Second American Revolution.

During the 1864 presidential election, it was one of 12 states carried by incumbent Republican President Abraham Lincoln during his unsuccessful reelection campaign. The state had six electoral votes during the election.

Literary Comment

In the short story "Joe Steele", Connecticut is one of the six states to vote for incumbent President Herbert Hoover in the 1932 election (the other five states were Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Vermont). Connecticut is never directly mentioned in the novel.

Connecticut in "Manuscript Tradition"

Connecticut was an indirect and unknowing site of contact between Earth and an extraterrestrial civilization in the 20th century, a fact that was only understood in 2219. In the 20th century, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University came into possession of the Voynich Manuscript and unwittingly employed its author, an alien who used the name "Loquasto".

In July 2219, images from an exploratory crawler that had arrived on Loquasto's home planet, Faraday, began arriving at Earth. Hanafusa realized some of the images of Faraday's flora were identical to the odd plants and flowers depicted in the Voynich Manuscript. When Loquasto returned to the library to find the Manuscript, the curator, Feyrouz Hanafusa, caught him in his search. Locquasto told her his story, then left the library without the Manuscript.

Hours later, further images more concretely connected the Voynich Manuscript to intelligent life on Faraday. Hanafusa was inundated with calls by Manuscript enthusiasts, as well as other V.I.P.'s, including the Governor of Connecticut. In response, Loquasto faked his death by burning down his West Haven home, and went into hiding.

Connecticut in Southern Victory

Connecticut was generally untouched during the War of Secession, the Second Mexican War, the Great War, and the Second Great War.

Politically, Connecticut (along with the rest of the New England states) was a Conservative Democratic state. For example, the state gave its electoral votes to Calvin Coolidge in 1928. However, Coolidge lost the election to Socialist Party candidate, incumbent Vice President Hosea Blackford, by a narrow margin. The state again voted for Coolidge in 1932. He won this election in a landslide, but died of a heart attack on January 5, 1933, less than a month before his inauguration of February 1. This resulted in his running mate Herbert Hoover becoming President instead.

Connecticut in The Two Georges

In the aftermath of the Seven Years' War, Connecticut was one of a number of colonies that chafed under unrepresentative direct British rule. However, a new arrangement was peacefully negotiated forming the North American Union. Thus, Connecticut was one of the oldest Provinces of the NAU.
