The February 26 Incident (二・二六事件, Ni-niroku jiken, or “2-2-6 incident”) was an attempted coup d'état in Japan, from February 26 to 29, 1936 carried out by 1,483 troops of the Imperial Japanese Army. Several leading politicians were killed and the center of Tokyo was briefly occupied by the rebelling troops. At that time, the incident was called the deplorable incident in the capital.
February 26 Incident in The War That Came Early
The February 26 Incident was still fresh in the minds of many Japanese in both civilian and political circles. Officers of the Kwantung Army had been involved in the coup resulting in the Army's increasing control over the government, as many feared if they opposed the will of the army too much they too would be assassinated.
