Ed McGraw (b. c. 1897), of Anderson, Indiana, was the husband of Diana McGraw and the father of Pat and Betsy. Having lost two toes in World War I, McGraw had attempted to enlist in the Army after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, but was rejected. His son did enter the army, however, and was part of the eventual invasion and occupation of Germany. On September 19, 1945, Pat McGraw was killed outside of Munich in an attack launched by the German Freedom Front. This despite the fact that the war had officially ended. Like his wife, Diana, Ed felt that the continued fighting and occupation was a waste of American lives. Although not as driven as his wife, Ed was very supportive of her efforts to bring an end to the occupation of Germany, which included founding Mothers Against the Madness in Germany.
As the years passed, McGraw sensed that his wife had changed. However, he did not realize that she had grown completely unsatisfied with Ed and their marriage. Despite her eventual success in 1947, Diana McGraw grew depressed, and Ed McGraw did not understand why.
