The Door to the human world was considered by the elves to be the Artist's greatest gift to them. As familiarity and commonality were seen as leading to ennui, trips to the human world were rigidly rationed to keep them rare and precious. An elf might spend centuries between trips. Doorkeepers consulted with each traveler and discussed possible destinations with him or her. It was from Doorkeepers that Lingol learned about a human city named for his favorite historical figure. They warned him that it was unlike anything that existed in his previous visit, news which the change-loving Lingol regarded as good - much to the eventual sorrow of him and large numbers of his people.
