Pedro II (2 December 1825 – 5 December 1891), nicknamed "the Magnanimous" was the second and last Emperor of Brazil. His reign of 58 years, the second-longest of any known New World monarchy, saw the abolition of slavery in the Empire. Despite initial success as Emperor, Pedro began losing interest in politics and ruling effectively. A military coup deposed him in 1889, and he died of pneumonia in France two years later.
Dom Pedro II in The Guns of the South[]
Under Dom Pedro II, Brazil extended recognition to the Confederate States after the Army of Northern Virginia took Washington City in 1864. President Jefferson Davis felt that, given Brazil's reliance on slavery, it should have extended recognition sooner.[1]
