Pedro II (2 December 1825 – 5 December 1891), nicknamed "the Magnanimous" was the second and last Emperor of Brazil. Despite initial success as Emperor, Pedro began losing interest in politics and ruling effectively. After a reign of 58 years, he was deposed in 1889, and died of pneumonia in France two years later.

Dom Pedro II in The Guns of the South

Under Dom Pedro II, Brazil extended recognition to the Confederate States after the Army of Northern Virginia took Washington City in 1864. President Jefferson Davis felt that, given Brazil's reliance on slavery, it should have extended recognition sooner.[1]

Literary Comment (Southern Victory)

As Dom Pedro IV still rules the Empire of Brazil in Breakthroughs, Dom Pedro II may not have been overthrown in the Southern Victory timeline. However, Harry Turtledove did not examine the issue, and anything beyond this is speculation.
