David Hamburger (b. 1897) was the brother of Congresswoman and one-time U.S. First Lady Flora Blackford. He served in the United States Army in the Great War in Chester Martin's squad on the Roanoke Front. Hamburger was severely wounded; his leg had to be amputated above the knee. Flora had refused to use her position as congresswoman to protect David, a decision David supported. She nonetheless felt a certain guilt for that choice, although David never bore her any ill-will.
Following the war, Hamburger, who came from a radical Socialist family, became a conservative Democrat as a result of his hatred of the Confederate States. He was wary of Jake Featherston and the Freedom Party's rise in that country long before the Second Great War and knew some satisfaction when his once-dovish sister belatedly realized he was right to distrust them.
After the Second Great War, Hamburger met with his sister, and reminisced about the course of history since 1914.
