Darren Pitcavage was the son of San Atanasio police chief Mike Pitcavage, and a notorious debauch.[1] Darren, as an important official's son, was highly pampered and loathed by his father's colleagues. He was known to take drugs and other profligacy but never came to justice due to his father's protection. Nearly three years after the Yellowstone Supervolcano eruption, Darren got into a dispute with a fellow patron in a stripper bar. He coldcocked the other man knocking out two teeth and breaking a third but faced no charges since it was deemed self-defense through his father's influence.[2]
However, Lt. Colin Ferguson, told by his son that Darren was peddling marijuana,[3] decided to launch a discreet investigation into the matter.[4] With the help of Detective Rodney Ellis, he gathered enough evidence to arrest Darren for felony drug dealing. In addition to the marijuana, he also possessed methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin and a .45 automatic that he was smart enough to not reach for when he was arrested.[5]
After Darren's arrest, his distraught father killed himself. Lt. Ferguson was the senior officer available so was called in at about 3:30 in the morning to take charge and tell Darren the grim news. At first Darren didn't believe it, thinking he was being softened up for further questioning but soon realized the truth and broke down.[6]
Most of the department thought Mike killed himself because of his affection for his son and his inability to help him.[7] But it was soon realized, it was because Darren's DNA would reveal that Chief Pitcavge was the serial murderer, the South Bay Strangler.[8]
