Dante Alighieri, or simply Dante (1265–1321), was an Italian poet from Florence. His central work, the Divine Comedy, is considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature. The most famous canitca of this work is Inferno.

Gianfranco Mazzilli had to write a canto in the style of Dante for his literature class. As part of that assignment, he had to chose a feudal lord, a capitalist, and a Fascist and assign each to a circle of Hell. Mazzilli thought that writing in Dante's style was a daunting task, given the changes in the language in the 900 years since Dante had written Inferno.
