Daniel Cressy was the executive officer aboard the USS Remembrance from 1917 to 1941, when the ship was sunk early in the Second Great War. Cressy was an astute officer, and realized that Sam Carsten, although a mustang, had solid political instincts and keen insights into the future of the U.S. Navy, and encouraged him to seek his own command.
During the Second Great War, Cressy rose through the Naval ranks and was awarded the Navy Cross. At the end of the war, Cressy was a captain and part of the review board that interviewed Carsten. The Naval brass also picked Carsten's brains about the future subsequent to the war, and what the U.S. Navy should do to be ready for it.
