Chile was one of the world's great powers.

Chile was a traditional rival of Argentina, and in the Great War, it aligned itself with the Central Powers. It fought a naval war against Argentina that was heavily supported by the United States Navy and a land war that was much smaller than those seen on North America and Europe.
In 1917, Chile granted diplomatic recognition to the Republic of Quebec. That same year, Chilean warships, many of them built in US Navy shipyards, took part in an international naval flotilla with American and Brazilian ships which cut supply lines between Argentina and Britain, forcing the last major Entente combatant to surrender.
The fighting between Chile and Argentina continued after the Great War ended on other continents, though neither country could decisively break through the Andes or gain any clear advantage in the Fuegian archipelago. By the outbreak of the Second Great War, Chile was on the brink of another conflict with its neighbor, though peace held through 1941 as the Argentines did not want to give the US an excuse to meddle in that part of the world.

In the 19th Century administrative rearrangements, following the merging of France and Spain into the Holy Alliance, the Spanish-ruled south-western region of South America was divided in two, its northern part being part of the colony of Peru, ruled from Lima, while its southern part was incorporated into the colony of La Plata with its center in Buenos Aires.
