Chemnitz

Chemnitz is a city in the Eastern German state of Saxony. From the 1950s until the 1980s, the East Germany authorities changed its name to Karl-Marx-Stadt (Karl Marx City). This name was abandoned after the communist state collapsed.

Chemnitz in The Man With the Iron Heart[]

Chemnitz was heavily bombed by the Anglo-Americans during World War II. However, it was occupied by the Soviet Union after the war.

In Spring 1946, NKVD Captain Vladimir Bokov travelled to Chemnitz after the German Freedom Front had carried out a series of assassinations. He met with the Soviet-appointed burgomeister, Max Müller, about the town's inability to deal with the GFF. Müller was astonished that Bokov seemed to have no better answers.

While watching a chain-gang, Bokov came to the realization that the GFF was playing a numbers game as much as anything else, after he calculated what might happen if he executed prisoners who'd sent him hateful looks.
