Charles V (1500-1558) was Holy Roman Emperor from 1519 until his death. He also ruled as Charles I of Spain from 1516 until he abdicated in 1556. He was descended from the House of Hapsburg dynastic line. His territory included much of what is now Austria, Germany and Italy as well as Spain and the Netherlands.
Charles V was a staunch Catholic. He tried to prevent the Protestant reformer Martin Luther from preaching his reformist religious beliefs.
Charles V in Ruled Britannia
As a grandson of Ferdinand II and Isabella, Charles V was a first cousin of Queen Mary I of England. When Charles's son, Philip II, conquered England in 1588, Philip used this family connection to Mary I (his former wife) who was, according to Catholic canon, the last legitimate Tudor monarch, to install his daughter (Charles's granddaughter and Mary's first cousin twice removed) on the English throne.
