Sergeant Chang Guoliang was a conscript in the Chinese Army. As a farm boy from Qinhai Province, he found the military life a lot better and considered making it a career.

During the Sino-American War of 2117, Chang took part in the punitive raid on Los Angeles. He found the idea of armed civilians that his superiors had warned his company about to be insane but found it to be quite true. Nevertheless, the meta-reality armor he wore protected him from regular firearms, swatting bullets away before they got within 30 centimeters (1 foot) of him.

Chang's platoon did run into some trouble with a few U.S. Army holdouts. As they passed a house, a tongue of flame from a flamethrower licked out, incinerating a soldier. Immediately the platoon returned fire with energy beams and grenades but failed to kill or disable the flamethrower. The platoon commander contacted higher ups who directed a "lightning" blast at the house.

It was so bright that Chang had to look away. He was surprised to see two survivors stagger out and attempt to surrender. One was unarmed and so his surrender was accepted. The other was dumb enough to continue to wear the fuel and propellant tanks of a flamethrower. He was gunned down like a mad dog.
