The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (known as Ceylon before 1972) is an island country in the Indian Ocean, a short distance from India.

Because of its location in the path of major sea routes, Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia. It has been a religious and cultural center of Buddhism since ancient times. Today, the multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation has more than a quarter of the population following other faiths, such as Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam.

Throughout history, the island was split between various rulers, including the colonial empires of Portugal and the Netherlands. The British Empire gained control of all Ceylon, and ruled it as a colony from 1815 to 1948. It was then upgraded to a self-governing dominion until 1972, when Ceylon cut all ties with the United Kingdom and changed its name to Sri Lanka. A 26-year civil war began in 1983 and ended in 2009, when the Sri Lanka Armed Forces defeated the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

In Harry Turtledove timelines, Ceylon is still under British rule.
