The Central African Republic is a landlocked country in Central Africa, bordering with Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, and Cameroon. From 1894 to 1960, it was a French colony called Ubangi-Chari. It became a semi-autonomous territory of the French Community in 1958 and then an independent nation in 1960. During the 1970s, its name was briefly changed to the Central African Empire.
