The name "Senate" to refer to a lawmaking body dates back to the Roman Republic, but the functions of Senates in different countries vary wildly. For example, in the United States, the Senate is both more prestigious and arguably much more powerful than the House of Representatives. The Canadian Senate, by contrast, while formally considered the Upper House, plays a role in the lawmaking and political processes which is very much subordinate to that of the "Lower" House of Commons.
