First Lady is an unofficial title used for the wife or hostess of the head of state or chief executive. It is arguably most associated with the wife of the President of the United States, although even then, not every First Lady has been the President's wife. In recent years, the American media has fallen into the habit of referring to the wife of a head of state or head of government as a "first lady", irrespective of whether a different appellation (or none) is used in that country. The term is not used when referring to the wife of a monarch.
