This category contains countries whose governments play roles in various works of Turtledove's. Some, like Ireland, exist today. Others, like Austria-Hungary, once existed but are now defunct, and still others, like the Confederate States, never existed as independent countries.

However, all these countries have borders which, real or imagined, exist on the geographic Earth. Countries, nation-states, kingdoms, empires and so forth that exist in fantasy or science fiction stories on worlds other than Earth should be included in categories specific to their alternate worlds whenever possible.
