Cassius (d. 1917) was the huntsman for the Marshlands Plantation in St. Matthews, South Carolina, owned by the Colleton family. He was also head of the socialist underground in the area. Because he was a hunter for the Marshlands estate, he would leave for several days at a time, once using his hunting as an excuse to make contact with US operatives in fermenting rebellion.

Cassius was also one of the few people that called Scipio by his nickname of "Kip". When the Red Rebellion of 1915-16 broke out, Cassius became the leader of the Congaree Socialist Republic and was responsible for ordering the execution of many “enemies of the proletariat,” in kangaroo courts - both black and white. He escaped the crushing of the Republic in 1916 and with his female companion, Cherry, continued rear-guard guerrilla operations against the Confederacy, and in particular against Anne Colleton whilst hiding in the swamps. Following the conclusion of the war, Anne Colleton led a final assault on Cassius' stronghold backed by demobilized soldiers and the South Carolina militia. Cassius was able to evade the pursuing soldiers by double-backing on his escape route but didn't reckon on Tom Colleton being stuck in the mud, spotting Cassius, and then opening fire. Cassius died with a triumphant grin on his face and sank without trace.

Many years after his death, Scipio, then going under his Xerxes alias, named his son after the hunter.
