Caroline Pitcavage was the wife of San Atanasio Police Chief Mike Pitcavage. About three years after the Yellowstone Supervolcano erupted, her son Darren was arrested for felony drug-dealing.
That night she heard a noise and went to wake Mike but discovered his body. He had taken a drug overdoes and affixed a plastic bag over his head committing suicide. She called the police headquarters and spoke to Sgt. Neil Schneider who subsequently contacted Lt. Colin Ferguson.[1]
Caroline blamed Ferguson for Mike's death since he initiated the investigation and subsequent arrest of Darren. She called him and apologetically disinvited him to the funeral since his presence would only remind her of what he did to her family.[2] She also disinvited Det. Rodney Ellis who had carried out the investigation and laid the charges.[3]
After it was discovered that Mike Pitcavage was the South Bay Strangler, Caroline reconsidered and telephone Ferguson to apologize. She explained that she thought and said horrible things about Ferguson until she discovered what a monster Mike had been. She hinted that Mike hadn't used all the pills but then told Ferguson not to call 911 because she didn't intend to kill herself. She wondered what Oprah or Ellen would pay for her to open up on national TV but then said she would discuss it with her lawyer first. She apologized again and then hung up.[4]
