Carolina was a nation-state in North America. Sometime after the United States fell apart in the early 19th century, the states of North Carolina and South Carolina merged into one state. Like many other countries that had been slave states, Carolina had a rigid hierarchy that kept the former slaves on the bottom rung of society.
