The French 75mm field gun was a quick-firing field artillery piece adopted by the French Army in March 1898. Its official designation was: Matériel de 75mm Mle '1897. It was commonly known as the French 75, simply the 75 (Soixante-Quinze in French).
The 75 is widely regarded as the first modern artillery piece.

The French 75 was a French-designed, fast-firing, light artillery copied by the Confederate States during the Great War. The three-inch field guns of the First Richmond Howitzers were copies of the French 75s.

When the Germany Army finally launched its offensive into France, in the last weeks of 1938, the French still had the 75's in service. Willi Dernen's father had talked often to him about the French guns, and complained that there wasn't much the German soldiers could do about them. Now with the help of Stukas, the 75 wasn't as formidable as it had been.
