Brownsville is the county seat of Haywood County, Tennessee. The city is named after Jacob Jennings Brown, a United States Army officer who served during the War of 1812.

Brownsville, Tennessee in Fort PillowEdit

In 1864, Brownsville was a firmly pro-Confederate town. Several regiments under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest rendezvoused in Brownsville just prior to their attack on the Union garrison at Fort Pillow. They also picked up a guide in the town, W.J. Shaw.
