Baron Howard ruled over a domain next to Baron Ritz' lands. After Ritz' war rabbits crossed over onto Howard's land and stuffed themselves on his meadows, Howard allowed his guards to shoot the rabbits and eat their meet. In response, Ritz had his men shoot Howard's guards. A brief range war followed, which ended in victory for Howard when his mercenary Lani captured the chief of Ritz' mercenaries and scattered his forces.
Baron Howard is broadly based on the unnamed Boss (Curley's father) from John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men.
