Bangor is a city in and the county seat of Penobscot County in the U.S. state of Maine, and the major commercial and cultural center for eastern and northern Maine. Bangor is the principal city of the Bangor Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 153,923, and encompasses all of Penobscot County.

As of 2008, Bangor is the third most populous city in Maine, as it has been for more than a century. Bangor is the largest market town, distribution center, transportation hub, and media center in a five-county area whose population tops 330,000 and which includes Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock, Aroostook, and Washington counties.

Bangor in The Hot WarEdit

Bangor was the only U.S. city on the East Coast the Soviets attacked with an atomic bomb on March 2, 1951. They were also able to drop a bomb in Newfoundland in Canada.[1]

Bangor in "Must and Shall"Edit

Vice President Hannibal Hamlin retired to Bangor in 1864 after being passed over for renomination. In July, an emergency telegram summoned him out of Bangor to Washington to assume the Presidency following Abraham Lincoln's death.[2]
