Antigua and Barbuda is a twin-island nation lying between the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of two major inhabited islands, Antigua and Barbuda, and a number of smaller islands. Although Christopher Columbus did land on the islands in 1493, Antigua and Barbuda have been British possessions since the 17th century. The consequence of European contact was the decimation of the native population. In 1981, Antigua and Barbuda became an independent state within the British Commonwealth.
Like most islands, Antigua and Barbuda was spared direct invasion by the Race in 1942, and retained their its independence by default after the 1944 Peace of Cairo.[1]
