The Allegheny River is a river that flows through southwestern New York and western Pennsylvania. It is the most northeastern extension of the Mississippi River tributaries. The area of the Allegheny river is well known for rich coal deposits. The Allegheny is one of the three rivers flowing through Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The crossing of the Allegheny and the other rivers of Pittsburgh become critical to the success of the Confederate Army in their attempts to seize the critical industrial centre. The rivers, the Allegheny among them provide critical obstacles that stall the advance of the Confederates in Operation Coalscuttle and the Battle of Pittsburgh. The river ultimately hemmed in the last C.S. defenders who were forced to surrender to the advancing United States forces.
